Stargate Studios is a high-tech production house that specialises in visual effects for the tee-vee and film industry, and they are playing at the top of the game. Check out the very impressive showreel for their "virtual backlot"... where they film sequences for a whole range of programmes you've definitely seen. Very cool stuff.

From Studio Daily magazine... a post-NAB yack-fest focused on digital storage and archiving.

Spooky line (among many):

"...shooting with the RED or shooting with the Varicam or whatever, shooting with data-based acquisition formats... and because nobody has figured out archiving, there's a whole generation of filmmaking that's just gonna be lost."

Crowd Control - Pre-keyed footage

Here's an interesting offering.

It's a huge array of different stock shots available from web-friendly to HD all with high quality alpha channels.

They sell the box set but far more interesting is their online search engine and their affordable price structure. (US$10 - US$50 per shot)

The search categories in particular are very production friendly. You can tick boxes for number of people (or animals) in shot, as well as wide, close and a tracking shots.

Tilt-shifting is a vey cool photographic technique that changes the perspective of images to make them look like miniature models, rather than real-world images. It does this by using either special lenses that tilt the lens relative to the image plane of the camera, or shift the lens relative to the image plane so that the area in focus is restricted. (Geek-check... the geometric formulae that explain this are part of the Scheimpflug principle.)

Whatever... the effect is cool. And now it can be done digitally, and online, too, with any image you like.
